For the first time, the government might present a “detailed, ambitious and precise” explanation of what it hopes the final deal with the EU will deliver. Ahead of yet another critical Brussels summit in June, a Brexit White Paper setting out the priorities for Britain’s future relationship with the EU was signed off at cabinet this week. The paper is expected to include a plan for the customs relationship that avoids re-establishing a hard Irish border. The current impasse on a possible arrangement adds to the PM’s pressure to finally take a decision on which of the arrangements she will back. After all, a hard border might shift the Northern Irish opinion towards a break-away from the UK and a united Ireland.

The “hostile environment” policy that created the Windrush scandal has lead up to the resignation of Home Secretary Amber Rudd. Although the appointment of her successor Sajid Javid this week is a landmark in itself – he is the first politician from an ethnic minority to take on one of the great offices of state – there seems no end to the Prime Minister’s problems:
First of all, Rudd was not only one of the most prominent Remainer’s in the cabinet but also she is the fourth person forced to resign from the cabinet in the last six months. Secondly, Theresa May herself pushed the “hostile environment” for illegal migrants since 2014 whilst being Home Secretary. Thirdly, Javid ranks as a Eurosceptic and seems determined to make his own mark in the ”glittering coffin” for political careers.

If you are a professional with further ambition and in search of a new opportunity that could make you a very serious contender for the top job – feel free to get it done by investigating new job opportunities. You can find them here and on politjobs.uk!

More than a year after article 50 was triggered by the government, talks about future trade ties commence between Senior British and EU officials. Very likely you are up to date concerning the news on Britain’s impending exit from the European Union. On April 10th in 1998, a very different kind of history was made: British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern signed The Good Friday Agreement. Even though the agreement proved difficult to be implemented, it ended the 30 years of “The Troubles” – a sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland by setting up a power-sharing assembly to govern Northern Ireland by cross-community consent. In May 1998, the Good Friday agreement was approved on both sides of the Irish border in a simultaneous referendum. This ensured two decades of peace and no fixed border. Now “The Irish Question” is threatening the conclusion of the contract between London and the EU directly. And those who won the referendum on the basis of culture and identity seem deaf to such concerns.

If you appreciate significant analyses on political issues or want to ensure that a successful outcome does not appear remote, feel free to investigate new job opportunities – you can find them here and on politjobs.uk!

This week politico.eu published the EU-Parliament’s “Motion for a resolution to wind up the debate on the framework of the future EU-UK relationship”. It proposes an “association agreement” between the EU and the U.K., and makes clear that the EU has “binding common rules, common institutions and common supervisory, enforcement and adjudicatory mechanisms,” which mean that even closely aligned non-EU countries cannot “enjoy similar benefits or market access.” To underline this stance the document insists that “continued membership of the United Kingdom in the Internal Market and the Customs Union” is the Parliament’s preferred option. But as the UK-Parliament, the EU-Parliament does not have a formal role in the Brexit negotiations, but it will have a binding vote on the eventual deal.

Several campaigns opposing a Brexit agreement have emerged in recent weeks. By putting pressure on MPs to oppose a Brexit agreement, they are calling for a re-run of the 2016 EU membership referendum. One of them, Best for Britain, captured the headlines this month because of a large donation from billionaire investor George Soros. With the Renew party a movement is taking a different approach. Inspired by the success of French President Emmanuel Macron the centrist party is reaching out to voters who feel “politically homeless and abandoned”. James Clarke, one of the party’s leaders, explains the strategy: “What we are is almost the more military arm of that movement, whereas we are actually standing candidates in seats to threaten those MPs that are not changing their minds, or are not standing up for the views of their constituents.” The party will face its first test in the local elections in May and has launched a crowd-funding campaign to ensure it can field some candidates in time.

What prompted Farage’s conversion to the cause of a second referendum on the UK’s EU membership? asks Euroblogger Jon Worth – and probably many more in Europe. Worth’s theory is, that a second referendum that went narrowly for Remain would actually suit Farage pretty well. Although he would never admit it, Farage could carry on sniping from the sidelines and whingeing about elites not taking the people seriously, but actually not have to take any responsibility for the very complicated business of making Brexit happen. This might be a very optimistic perspective as the polls show a neck-and-neck race between Leavers and Remainers. And Nigel Farage wants to make sure that his supporters are prepared if the occasion of a second poll arises: “It may not be what we want, but it could be unavoidable. In the next few months, committed leavers must prepare for a second poll and get ready to start campaigning.”

Politico.eu published its annual “Who to watch in 2018” list. German liberal chief Christian Lindner tops the list as he pulled the plug on coalition talks in Germany and ensured his place at the center of the ensuing debate. The brain behind Brexit, U.K. Environment Secretary Michael Gove, came in second place. Gove’s vision for Britain after Brexit and his intellectual force in government have sparked rumors that he is being lined up to take over from Philip Hammond as chancellor of the exchequer. The European Parliament’s Brexit rapporteur Guy Verhofstadt is No. 10. Politico describes him as a dealmaker, but: “While he’s always ready to do a deal, there’s always a price tag attached. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned about negotiations so far, Britain doesn’t like Brexit price tags.” Of course, politicians aren’t alone in driving the European debate. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, the Lithuanian conductor of the U.K.’s City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (No. 27) is on the list as well as the Tech’s dark prophet Evgeny Morozov. You might want to find yourself on the list for 2019 or you can look for an interesting job in this newsletter and as usual more on politjobs.uk!

It’s hard to work out when the worm turned for Big Tech. Big Tech was, almost by definition, progress, Matthew Gwyther remembers. But now it is on the reputational back foot. Facebook suddenly became a rapacious Goldman Sachs-style giant squid sucking all the advertising pounds and dollars – or indeed, rubles – from an increasingly desperate legacy media industry. Twitter detects 3.3 million suspicious accounts each week these days. Uber’s zeal became a vile, sexist, excessive fierceness; Amazon’s control of 43% of online retail meant everyone selling anything from buttons to ball-bearings got squashed, he reminds us. The shattered confidence in Big Tech shows how fast public opinion changes. Today your branch is the rising star, tomorrow you are the robber baron. If this fact does not scare you, please find attached some jobs and as usual more on politjobs.uk!
