National Literacy Trust seeks Policy and Communications Manager

National Literacy Trust 5<y Senior Level  London, England, United Kingdom 24 Jan 2018

Job Description

Policy and Communications Manager

  • Flexible hours, 28 to 35 hours per week
  • Maternity cover for up to one year
  • Based in London SW8

We are looking for a highly motivated Policy and Communications Manager to take on a maternity cover role for up to one year. You will position the National Literacy Trust at the forefront of literacy policy development, manage the charity’s policy work and coordinate coalition campaigning activity.

As part of our marketing and communications team, you will be responsible for analysing and reporting on developments in literacy policy. You will build and maintain links with Parliamentarians and other key policymakers, lead the activity of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Literacy and manage the activity of the National Literacy Forum. You will manage our cross-sector campaigns, build and maintain relationships with corporate partners in the policy and communications space and promote our local areas work to policymakers. You will also prepare materials for reports, newsletters and websites, and organise events to raise awareness of the importance of literacy, and support communications activity across the organisation.

One person in six has poor literacy skills that impact on every area of their life. A child without good reading, writing and communication skills can’t succeed at school, and as an adult they could be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood of literacy failure by the age of five.

We are an independent charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK. Our research and analysis make us the leading authority on literacy. We run projects in the poorest communities, campaign to make literacy a priority for politicians and parents, and support schools. Our mission is to give young people the literacy skills they need to get a job and lead a successful life.

As well as a competitive salary, we offer benefits including a generous annual leave allowance of 28 days (plus bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and new year), and pensions contributions of 8% of annual salary.

Closing date: 10am, Monday 19 February 2018.
